Our Staff
We know the stereotype for Accountants: dull, slightly outdated persons who are better punching computer keys and “counting beans” than relating with people.
That’s because not all firms are interested enough in their clients to:
• Look for hidden opportunities and needs
• Adapt to your way of managing the business
• Offer creative and non-traditional solutions
DALE PATEMAN, B. Comm., C.A.
Dale graduated from university of Calgary (Bachelor of Commerce) and articled with the predecessor of KPMG chartered accountants in Calgary, graduating with a CA Degree in Alberta. Married to his wife Maureen, they have two grown daughters and five grandchildren.
Dale is very proud of the people he works with. Dale has a passion for golf, roller blading, biking, skate skiing and driving and is a rookie guitar player… not your run-of-the-mill bean counter!

SHARON LATHAM, C.G.A.
I moved to the Comox Valley from the Toronto area in 1987, with my husband and two children. We wanted to get away from the fast pace, urban sprawl and pollution of the big city scene. Both my husband and I grew up in small towns and wanted to raise our children in that same atmosphere.
I started working for Dale Pateman in 1992 and completed my Certified General Accountant designation in 2000. Accounting is my second career. I am a registered nurse in Ontario and worked in a hospital setting for several years, but made the switch from health care to the financial field before moving to B.C. With my health care background, I was the prime candidate to provide services to all our medical clients. Over the years, I have assisted many clients in many and varied fields of endeavor to make sense out of the numbers.
I have served on several boards as a director, such as Courtenay Youth Music Society and Area B Rural Residents Association. I have also been actively involved with the Schoolhouse Quilters’ Guild for many years, as a member of the executive, workshop coordinator and Quilt Show coordinator. I also tutor accounting students at North Island College as the need arises.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, quilting, card-making, walking, gardening and trying to assist my husband with turning our little acre of this fantastic valley into our personal vision of paradise.
DONNA P.CLOUTIER, C.A.
Donna is a manager at Pateman and Company, Chartered Accountant, and in her role she provides personalized and practical financial advice to small businesses and non-profit organizations on Northern Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.
Donna moved to the Comox Valley in the summer of 1990 as a Meteorological Technician for the Canadian Armed Forces. While still in the military, she continued with her education in the accounting field at North Island College, part-time until 1995 and full-time afterwards until she obtained her Chartered Accountant designation in 2000. She was on the North Island College’s Dean’s List in 1997.
Being a business owner herself (co-owner of The Joint – Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre with her husband Edwin Betinol), Donna fully understands the needs of the clients of Pateman and Company. Her role with the firm will be to provide assistance and advice on accounting, cash management, corporate and personal tax preparation and assist small businesses and individuals with their accounting and tax issues.
Donna has recently completed the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountant’s In-depth Tax Course, the most complete and comprehensive tax training course available in Canada. With this course and her past professional experience, she is able to advise clients on a wide variety of topics.
Donna and the firm are committed to community building. Donna is currently serving as Treasurer for the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Society, and the Vancouver Island Waterkids Society. In her spare time, you will find Donna cycling, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, stand-up paddling, running, playing basketball or volleyball or taking the occasional dance lesson with her husband.
ALLYSON HAMILTON - C.A. Student
I have been a member of the firm since November 2004. In 2006, I received a Diploma in Business Administration – Accounting Option with Co-operative Education Designation from North Island College. I am currently completing requirements for a Bachelor of Business Administration – Accounting at North Island College, and am a Student in the CA School of Business.
I have lived in the Comox Valley since I was 9 years old, and plan to stay in the Valley indefinitely. Although I was accepted to Simon Fraser University immediately following high school graduation in 1997, I decided to remain in the Valley while I decided on a career path. In 1999 I completed the Pre-apprenticeship Automotive Technician Certificate at the Campbell River campus of North Island College, and worked as a Service Writer in an automotive shop until the fall of 2001 when I returned to North Island College to enter the Business Administration program.
I spend my free time with my husband Ryan, daughter Shelby, and son Cohen.
AFFILIATIONS
• Past student member (three terms) and present community member of the North Island College Board of Governors
• Past director of the Association Francophone de la Vallée de Comox
THU ROBERTSON - B.B.A. Student
In 2007 I joined Pateman & Company as a Co-op student from North Island College, and am glad to continue working for the firm. Having lived in the Comox Valley since I was 11 years old, I consider this beautiful area home, and am thankful to be able to remain here with my children while pursuing an accounting designation.
My two motivators, Mya and Alexander, keep me busy with exciting adventures on any and all beaches, fishing, hiking, and anything else fun our community has to offer.
NICOLE JOYAL - B.B.A. Student
I have been a member of the firm since June, 2008. The experience I have received has been tremendous. The Pateman & Company team are wonderful people to work with. Iam currently a student at North Island College working towards a Bachelor of Business Administration - Accounting Major.
I have called the Comox Valley home all of my life, and believe that will never change. I gained my experience at Canadian Tire in Courtenay. I worked as an assistant office administrator for the corporation. During this time I developed a passion for bookkeeping and accounting.
When I am not working, I enjoy my time in the outdoors and traveling on Vancouver Island; whether it is camping, fishing or just trail walking.
CHRIS JOYAL - Administration
I moved to the Comox Valley from Saskatchewan in 1985 with my husband and three sons. I started working for Dale Pateman shortly after. Over the years the firm has seen many changes and I have had the pleasure of working with a lot of different partners and staff who have come and gone.
My first few years working consisted mainly of reception duties. As time went on my job description vastly changed. I still work reception occasionally and really enjoy the interaction with our clients. I have recently become more involved with the administrative division of Pateman & Company. I am learning a lot and I look forward to the challenge.
When I am not working I enjoy the outdoors, including gardening, camping and a lot of weekend fishing trips to the west coast of the island.
LEANE OLSON - Reception
I moved to the Comox Valley, from Kelowna, in 2001 with my husband and two children. I began working for Dale Pateman in 2004. For approximately the past 15 years, most of my experience has been related to secretarial duties in a primarily accounting background. I have worked for both small, private Chartered Accountant offices and National firms with as many as 4-5 partners.
When I am not working, I enjoy camping with family and friends, reading, and baking. I also enjoy watching my children in their respective sports and other activities.
